Mr. Adams is a distinguished figure in the banking and finance sector. Since 2022, he has served as the managing executive officer and deputy head of the Americas at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, where he has been instrumental in expanding the bank’s mandate beyond traditional financial expertise. Recognized for his ability to integrate products across all business lines, Mr. Adams coordinates teams and trains staff, earning significant recognition from both clients and senior management for his leadership during a period of substantial integration and growth.

From 2020 to 2022, Mr. Adams excelled as an executive officer and the deputy head of the Americas at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. In this capacity, he advanced his reputation as a leader capable of driving cross-functional collaboration and supporting the development of the bank’s platform throughout the Americas. Between 2013 and 2020, he served the same firm as the managing director, general manager and head of specialized finance, Americas, as well as the head of Latin America, demonstrating broad expertise in project finance, structured finance and advisory services, particularly within emerging markets in Latin America.

Before joining Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Mr. Adams thrived as the senior managing director at Espirito Santo Investment from 2008 to 2013, during which time he helped launch an investment banking platform in the Americas for Banco Espirito Santo, developing products such as structured finance, project finance and advisory services across North America and Latin America. Mr. Adams is particularly proud that the startup grew into a highly valuable platform within five years under his leadership.

From 1999 to 2008, Mr. Adams was the managing director at Westdeutsche Landesbank (WestLB). One of his most significant achievements during this period was transforming WestLB into the leading structured and project finance bank in Latin America within two years by assembling a highly effective team. This accomplishment underscored his ability to build teams and empower people while delivering exceptional results.

In each successive position, Mr. Adams relied on experience earned in a series of key vice president roles including his work at Banco Santander in New York from 1996 to 1999, where he contributed to expanding the bank’s operations in Latin America, and at Banco NorChem SA (Chemical Bank) and Banco Chase Manhattan SA, in São Paulo from 1993 to 1996 where he also enjoyed a successful tenure. These positions enabled Mr. Adams to deepen his understanding of Latin American markets and forge strong, sustainable client relationships.

From 1990 to 1993, Mr. Adams was the vice president at Manufacturers Hanover Trust and Chemical Bank in New York City, where he gained foundational experience by managing complex financial transactions and supporting business development initiatives.

A desire to continually enhance his capabilities drove Mr. Adams to pursue academic excellence. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from St. John Fisher University in 1981, followed by a Master of Business Administration and a Master of International Management, with a focus on finance, the Latin American region, and Spanish language proficiency, from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in 1983. Notably, this advanced education equipped Mr. Adams with critical skills to navigate global markets and lead cross-border teams. He is also fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.

In addition to his academic credentials, Mr. Adams holds several industry designations that have supported his success in investment banking and financial services. He obtained Series 79 and Series 24 certifications from FINRA in 2021, as well as the Securities Industry Essentials License from FINRA that same year. Mr. Adams attributes his success to a genuine, transparent approach and an enduring commitment to honesty in all transactions.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Mr. Adams actively seeks opportunities for civic engagement. He has served as a board member for SMBC Global Foundation Inc. since 2022, for SMBC LF since 2020, and for the Bank’s Colombian Infra-Credit Fund since 2019 as executive sponsor for UNIQUE, an employee resource group within SMBC Group that focuses on physical/non-physical disabilities. Additionally, Mr. Adams is a dedicated supporter of Covenant House, the Bowery Mission, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, ChildFund (formerly Christian Children’s Fund) and various other charities focused on children’s welfare.

Mr. Adams is devoted to his family life. He is the proud father of two daughters and is very appreciative of his wife, who has been such a great support to him and his family over the years. To achieve balance, he enjoys playing guitar, cooking, making sourdough bread, horseback riding, hiking, biking, sculling, and exploring real estate opportunities. He is also passionate about traveling internationally (professionally and personally) and is actively involved in both domestic and international real estate. For the preceding nine years, Mr. Adams served as managing director and co-head of emerging markets at Westdeutsche Landesbank, transforming it into the leading structured and project finance bank in Latin America soon after joining and building out a star-studded team. Throughout the 1990s, he also thrived as senior vice president at Banco Santander in New York and vice president at Banco NorChem SA and Banco Chase Manhattan SA in São Paulo, Brazil. Mr. Adams commenced his career in 1984 at Manufacturers Hanover Trust (which merged with Chemical Bank in 1991) in New York City, before moving to São Paulo in 1994.

Mr. Adams’ professional journey was born from his academic background. After completing a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Political Science at St. John Fisher University in 1981, he earned a Master of International Business Administration (MIBA) and a Master of International Management (MIM) – with a focus on finance, the Latin American region and Spanish language proficiency – from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in December 1983.
